Clinical research shows that certain multifocal soft contact lens designs can slow both prescription progression and the excessive eye growth associated with myopia.
In one large three-year randomized clinical trial involving children ages 7 to 11, children wearing high-add multifocal contacts had an average prescription change of -0.60 diopters. Children wearing regular single-vision contacts had an average change of -1.05 diopters.
Eye growth also differed:
- 0.42 mm average axial growth with high-add multifocal contacts
- 0.66 mm average axial growth with single-vision contacts
- 0.24 mm difference in average eye growth over three years
These results help show why multifocal contact lenses are used for myopia management, but they do not predict an individual child’s results. Response can vary based on age, prescription, lens design, wearing habits, and other factors.
